Former US President Barack Obama has criticised
President Donald Trump’s justification for launching a war against Iran, saying
that Iran did not possess nuclear weapons and that its nuclear program could
have been restricted through diplomacy. According to an international news
agency report, Obama referred to the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran, reached
during his presidency, saying that the deal had helped impose restrictions on
Tehran’s nuclear program. He said he had chosen the path of diplomacy rather
than launching missiles.
The former president also expressed concern over
the consequences of the war against Iran, saying that US allies and military
bases had come under attack, while several American personnel had been killed
and hundreds injured. According to Obama, the conflict has also depleted US
missile stockpiles, leaving the country less secure than before. He further
claimed that Iran’s influence over the Strait of Hormuz had increased, giving
Tehran what he described as veto-like power over matters concerning the
strategically important waterway. Obama identified the situation in the Strait
of Hormuz as one of the factors driving up oil prices. The strait is a crucial
route for global oil shipments, and tensions in the area can therefore affect
international energy markets.
