Japanese Film Festival 2026 was inaugurated in Karachi

The Japanese Film Festival 2026 has officially opened in Karachi. The festival is being organized by the Consulate General of Japan in Karachi in collaboration with the Pakistan-Japan Cultural Association Sindh and the Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi. The annual film festival aims to introduce Pakistani audiences to Japanese culture, art and storytelling through cinema. The opening ceremony was held on Friday, jointly organized by the Consulate General of Japan in Karachi, the Pakistan-Japan Cultural Association Sindh and the Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi. The annual festival is held with the support of the Japan Foundation, with the primary objective of promoting Japanese culture through film and strengthening cultural ties between the people of Pakistan and Japan.

The opening ceremony featured a screening of the Japanese animated film Children of the Sea. The film follows a lonely teenage girl who develops a deep connection with two mysterious brothers who were raised in the sea. After meeting the two brothers, she begins to experience a mysterious mental and spiritual connection with the depths of the ocean. This year’s Japanese Film Festival features six Japanese films, including Children of the Sea. The films offer audiences an opportunity to explore Japan’s diverse stories, culture and cinematic genres. Screenings will continue at various venues across Karachi throughout September.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Japanese Consul General Masaru Hattori thanked the audience for their enthusiastic participation and highlighted the cultural significance of cinema.The Japanese Consul General expressed hope that the festival would provide participants with meaningful encounters, beautiful memories and perhaps a new perspective. Shahzain Khan, animator of the animated film The Glassworker and the guest of honour at the event, said that her creative journey began with Japanese anime and various cultural activities supported by the Consulate General of Japan in Karachi.

She also highlighted her association with the pop-culture  group Shonen Infinity. Khan appreciated the Japanese Consulate’s continued support for Pakistan’s growing pop-culture community through initiatives such as Geek Haven. According to Shahzain Khan, the Consulate’s support serves as an important source of inspiration for a new generation of artists and storytellers in Pakistan. Through the Japanese Film Festival 2026, audiences in Karachi are being given an opportunity to experience Japanese cinema, culture and creative expression at close quarters.
