According to media reports, a senior adviser to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has revealed that the Turkish president will run for another presidential term in an early election. The election could be held in April 2028. Private broadcaster NTV and the Cumhuriyet newspaper quoted Mehmet Ucum as saying that if 360 members of parliament support a decision to call an early election, it would be held on April 16, 2028, instead of May 2028, when the election is constitutionally scheduled. Under Turkish law, the election is scheduled to be held in May of that year. However, the Constitution allows Parliament to call an early election if 360 of its 600 members support the move, potentially clearing the way for Erdoğan to run for another term. The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and its nationalist ally, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), hold 326 seats in Parliament. The government has repeatedly confirmed that the election will be held on schedule. Erdoğan came to power as prime minister in 2003 and was elected president in 2014 after serving three terms as prime minister. Following Turkey’s transition to a presidential system, he was elected in 2018 and again in 2023.
