A wave of intense protests
has erupted across Spain following a significant rise in housing rents and the
forced eviction of an 87-year-old woman. Amid growing public anger and nationwide
demonstrations, the prime minister has announced early general elections.
According to reports,
thousands of protesters staged a sit-in outside Parliament in the capital
Madrid and chanted slogans against the government. Following the nationwide
protests and mounting public pressure, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro
Sánchez was compelled to announce a date for early general
elections.
The general elections will
now be held on November 29 this year,
several months earlier than originally scheduled. The elections had previously
been expected to take place in the summer of next year. Political analysts say
the eviction of the elderly woman has brought public anger over Spain’s housing
crisis and rising rents onto the streets months earlier than expected.
