California: The U.S. state of
California has banned marriage for people under the age of 18, with a new law
setting the minimum legal age for marriage at 18, effective January 1, 2027. According
to foreign media reports, after the governor signed the legislation, California
became the 18th U.S. state where the legal age for marriage has been set at 18.
However, child marriage remains legal in 32 other states. Under California’s
previous law, minors of any age could obtain permission to marry from a court
with parental consent. According to Unchained At Last, an organization
campaigning to end child marriage, approximately 9,000 children get married in
California every year.
