A painting purchased for just $30 at an estate sale in the United States has sold at auction for $1.35 million.
According to foreign media reports, Alderman Merriam’s Shells, a painting created in 1951 by renowned Chicago artist Gertrude Abercrombie, had been out of public view for decades. In July this year, a man searching for hidden treasures purchased the painting for just $30 at an estate sale in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Experts later examined the artwork and discovered that it was a long-lost painting by Gertrude Abercrombie.
Before the auction, the painting was estimated to fetch between $150,000 and $250,000. However, bidding far exceeded expectations, and the artwork ultimately sold for $1.35 million. This is the highest price ever paid for a painting by Gertrude Abercrombie. According to experts, the artist gave the painting to Michigan physician Dr. John Reynolds in 1952 in exchange for medical treatment. The artwork remained in the doctor’s family for approximately 75 years before eventually being sold at an estate sale.
