Taylor Swift made history at
the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), becoming the most-awarded artist in the
history of the MTV Video Music Awards. Swift received the inaugural Artist
Director Honors, taking her career total to 31 VMA awards. Before
receiving the honor, she was tied with Beyoncé at 30 awards each. The Artist Director Honors is
presented to artists who have expanded the possibilities of music videos
through their work behind the camera and contributed to advancing the art of
visual storytelling. While
accepting the award, Swift said that she had been involved in making music
videos for the past 20 years and had worked on nearly 60 music videos so far,
including 18 that she had written and directed herself.
Swift also won the Video
of the Year award for The Fate of Ophelia, which she
dedicated to the late singer Dolly Parton. During the ceremony, Swift premiered the music
video for her new song Patient Zero, which she directed herself. The video stars Colin
Farrell and Dakota Johnson, with Johnson and Swift
portraying each other as mirror images. Patient Zero is also Swift’s first single
since her marriage to Kansas City Chiefs player Travis
Kelce in July at Madison Square Garden.
