South Korean President Lee
Jae Myung has said that South Korea will build nuclear-powered submarines by
the mid-2030s and upgrade its missile defense capabilities. In a speech marking
Armed Forces Day, Lee Jae Myung said South Korea would develop nuclear-powered
submarines and strengthen its missile defense systems. South Korea has also
emphasized restoring trust with North Korea and resuming dialogue. Lee said the
nuclear-powered submarines would be equipped with artificial intelligence-based
command-and-control systems and high-energy laser interceptors. He said the
initiative would also include expanding artificial intelligence capabilities,
reorganizing the military for future warfare, and strengthening the country’s
“three-axis” defense system to detect and intercept missile threats. The South
Korean president said his administration would continue taking practical
measures on a sustained basis to reduce military tensions on the Korean
Peninsula.
