Boris Johnson Calls for Imran Khan’s Release

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has called for the release of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, questioned the reasons for his continued imprisonment, and urged the public to join the ongoing campaign for his release.  In a video message, Boris Johnson said people should ask why Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, has been in prison for three years and why he has been subjected to harsh conditions for such a long period. Presenting his views on the cases against Imran Khan and his imprisonment, the former British prime minister claimed that, in his view, the reason for Khan’s continued detention is his extraordinary popularity among the public.

Boris Johnson also accused Pakistan’s military leadership, saying he believes it fears that if Imran Khan is released, he could achieve electoral success in future elections with the strong support of his millions of followers. Referring to Imran Khan’s cricket career, Johnson described him as one of the greatest cricketers in Pakistan and the world and said that his popularity among the public remains intact.  Boris Johnson said it was not acceptable to keep someone in prison merely because of fears that they could achieve political and electoral success after being released. He described Imran Khan as elderly and ill and called for his release.  The former British prime minister also referred to an article he wrote for the British newspaper Daily Mail on the issue and urged people to read it and join the ongoing campaign for Imran Khan’s release.

Imran Khan’s son, Qasim Khan, also shared Boris Johnson’s video and article on the social media platform X. He thanked the former British prime minister for speaking out in support of his father.  Qasim Khan and his brother, Suleiman Khan, have recently been raising international concerns about their father’s imprisonment, his health, and the facilities being provided to him in prison.
