U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Saudi
Arabia to accept Israel’s offer of assistance in operations against Yemen’s
Houthi rebels, saying that Israel has been helpful to the kingdom. Trump has
also raised the possibility of targeting a key site linked to Iran’s
underground nuclear program to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump was asked whether Saudi Arabia
should accept Israel’s offer of assistance against the Houthis. He replied,
“Yes, absolutely,” saying that he believed Riyadh should accept the proposal. He
added that Israel had been very helpful to Saudi Arabia.
Earlier this week, a diplomatic source told an
Israeli newspaper that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had offered to
help Saudi Arabia counter Yemen’s Houthi rebels through American mediation. One
of the objectives of the proposal was reportedly to strengthen relations
between Israel and Saudi Arabia. However, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin
Salman had reportedly opposed the idea, fearing that such cooperation with
Israel could trigger a public backlash in Saudi Arabia.
Trump Raises Possibility of Striking Iranian
Nuclear Site
Meanwhile, Trump has adopted a hard-line stance
on Iran’s nuclear program, saying that the United States might have to attack a
site known as “Pickaxe Mountain,” which is linked to Iran’s underground nuclear
facilities, to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. According to
Trump, striking the site could be necessary to eliminate Iran’s nuclear
capabilities. In an interview on Thursday night, Trump said the United States
would not use nuclear weapons in the ongoing war against Iran. However, he
reiterated that Washington would not allow Tehran to acquire nuclear weapons
under any circumstances.
Trump said the United States wanted to ensure
that Iran never possessed nuclear weapons, claiming that if Tehran acquired
them, it would use them. Referring to Iran’s underground nuclear facilities,
Trump said the country’s nuclear capabilities were located beneath an extremely
massive mountain. He added that the United States was examining a site known as
“Pickaxe Mountain” and that military action might be necessary to target it.
According to Trump, if the United States decided to attack the site, it would
destroy it quickly. His remarks suggest that Washington is considering the
possibility of further military action to restrict Iran’s nuclear program.
