The United Kingdom has announced the deployment
of fighter jets to help defend Saudi Arabia against attacks by Yemen’s Houthi
rebels. According to the British Ministry of Defence, Royal Air Force Typhoon
fighter jets will conduct defensive air missions to protect Saudi cities and
key installations. In a statement, the ministry said the deployment forms part
of additional military support for Saudi Arabia.
British Defence Secretary John Healey’s
successor, John Healey’s government counterpart, Wes Streeting, said in a
statement that the Houthis’ continued attacks on Britain’s ally, Saudi Arabia,
were deeply reprehensible. He said the targeting of Riyadh airport in
particular demonstrated how far the Houthis were willing to go to escalate
tensions in the region. According to a spokesperson for the British prime
minister’s office, the UK is already assisting Saudi Arabia with the supply of
aviation fuel. Air defense equipment and British personnel have also been
deployed to help protect the kingdom. The spokesperson clarified that British
Typhoon aircraft would take action to intercept missiles and drones heading
towards Saudi Arabia. Britain will also provide Saudi Arabia with an Atlas
A400M military transport aircraft.
