According to Yonhap News Agency, the
United States, South Korea, and Japan began five-day joint military exercises
on Monday. The exercises are aimed at strengthening operational capabilities
and enhancing the three countries’ ability to respond jointly across various
domains. Citing South Korea’s military chief, the agency reported that the
exercises, known as “Freedom Edge,” began in international waters east and
south of South Korea’s Jeju Island.
The exercises come at a time when
the Trump administration shortened the duration of the bilateral “Ulchi Freedom
Shield” exercises held with South Korea last month, in an effort to encourage
North Korea to return to the negotiating table. South Korea’s military chief
said, “By maintaining strong and stable cooperative relations, the three
countries will use these exercises to improve their operational capabilities
and joint response capabilities in various areas, including the maritime, air,
and cyber domains.”
Key naval and air assets from all
three countries will participate in the exercises. In addition, a joint control
group has been established to coordinate operations and ensure that they are
conducted in an organized and safe manner. The South Korean military said the
exercises are aimed at strengthening deterrence and response capabilities
against North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats, as well as maintaining
regional peace and stability.
What
Was North Korea’s Reaction?
North Korea’s position on these
joint military exercises is that they are a rehearsal for war. Yonhap reported
that the three countries will use six Aegis-equipped warships, as well as
maritime patrol aircraft, fighter jets, and aerial refueling aircraft, during
the exercises.
