Our Sun is a magnificent and gigantic star whose immense size and volume are astonishing for the human mind to comprehend. If the Sun were imagined as a hollow football, approximately 1.3 million Earths could easily fit inside it. This extraordinary size gives the Sun the tremendous gravitational pull that keeps the planets of our solar system, including Earth, locked in their respective orbits around it. Despite being approximately 150 million kilometers away from Earth, the light and heat of this enormous star are essential for sustaining life on our planet.
Without the Sun, Earth would be plunged into darkness and extreme cold, eventually becoming a barren and lifeless planet. The Sun is not only enormous in size; it is also a natural nuclear powerhouse that converts millions of tons of hydrogen into helium every second. This process, known as nuclear fusion, releases an incredible amount of energy, light, and heat. The temperature at its core is approximately 15 million degrees Celsius, which demonstrates its immense power. Although scientists consider the Sun a medium-sized star compared with the billions of other stars in the universe, it accounts for approximately 99.8 percent of the total mass of our solar system. This makes it the dominant and central body of our entire planetary system.
