US Confirms Deployment of Space Weapon in Earth Orbit

The United States has confirmed that it has deployed a space weapon in Earth’s orbit. According to the BBC, this is the first time the US government has officially acknowledged the existence of such an offensive space capability.  US Air Force Secretary Troy Meink said the weapon in orbit is necessary to protect US forces from potential hostile actions by adversaries. Speaking at the Air, Space and Cyber Conference, Meink said the United States is prepared to deal with evolving threats. However, he did not provide further details about the capabilities of the newly deployed weapon or when it was sent into orbit.

Senior US military officials have previously said that they want to expand the country’s military capabilities in space. They have argued that Russia and China are seeking to develop capabilities to target US satellites and disrupt their operations in any potential future conflict.  The US administration says space-based defense systems and interceptor missiles are an important part of its proposed Golden Dome defense initiative, which is aimed at protecting the United States from missile attacks and aerial threats.

An international treaty signed in 1967 prohibits the deployment of weapons of mass destruction in orbit around the Earth. Since then, major powers, including the United States, Russia and China, have continued to develop other systems that fall outside the scope of the treaty, including capabilities designed to target rival countries’ satellites. Satellites are considered essential for military communications, surveillance and navigation.

Last year, President Donald Trump issued an executive order emphasizing the role of the US Space Force. The order stated that the Space Force would not only defend US assets but could also be used to carry out attacks if necessary. Established in 2019, the US Space Force is the first new branch of the US military to be created in 70 years. Its purpose is to protect American assets in space, including hundreds of satellites used for communications and surveillance.  According to a spokesperson for the US Space Force, space control encompasses all operational areas required to compete in and gain control of the space domain.

For this purpose, both conventional and unconventional means can be used to affect, disrupt, degrade or, if necessary, destroy an adversary’s capabilities.  The spokesperson said these capabilities of the US Space Force could be used for both defensive and offensive purposes under the direction of combatant commands.  In early February, it was revealed that two Russian satellites had allegedly interfered with the communications systems of at least a dozen European satellites since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.  Such interference could potentially allow Russian intelligence agencies to access sensitive data transmitted by these satellites or, in some cases, gain control of them.

In 2024, the United States claimed that Russia had launched a satellite into orbit that it believed was capable of attacking other satellites. Russia did not publicly comment on the matter.  According to the US Space Force, China is acquiring space capabilities as part of its strategy to modernize its military, while Russia views space as a battlefield and believes that superiority in space will be a decisive factor in future conflicts.

The construction, deployment and operation of US President Donald Trump’s proposed Golden Dome defense system over two decades is expected to cost approximately $1.2 trillion. The estimate was made by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO).  However, concerns have also been raised that the system, which is being developed to protect the United States from ballistic and cruise missiles, may not prove to be fully effective.  The Congressional Budget Office has also warned that the Golden Dome could be vulnerable to a full-scale attack by Russia or China.  US defense officials have warned that existing systems are falling behind in their ability to counter advanced weapons possessed by potential adversaries.
