Adiala Jail Superintendent Submits
Response in Contempt Case over Denial of Lawyer’s Meeting with PTI Founder۔ The superintendent of Adiala Jail has submitted a response to
the Islamabad High Court in a contempt of court case over the failure to allow
the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to meet his lawyer despite a
court order. On Thursday, the Islamabad High Court heard a petition seeking a
ban on the PTI founder’s account on the social media platform X, which is
allegedly being operated without his control. The court sought arguments on the
merits of the case at the next hearing.
During the hearing, the issue of
the contempt case was also discussed after the PTI founder’s lawyer was not
allowed to meet him despite a court order.
In his response, the Adiala Jail
superintendent stated that political discussions take place during meetings
with the PTI founder. Therefore, the jail administration could not allow such
meetings. Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir asked whether Salman Akram Raja would be
allowed to meet the PTI founder if he assured the court that no political would
take place during the meeting.
The State Counsel said that he
would seek instructions from the Advocate General and submit a response on the
matter. Salman Akram Raja said that he could argue the merits of the case
without consulting the PTI founder. He said the court had ordered that he be
allowed to meet the PTI founder, but the order had not been implemented. The
court asked the jail authorities why Salman Akram Raja was not being allowed to
have the power of attorney signed by the PTI founder.
Salman Akram Raja said the issue
was not limited to the power of attorney, adding that he wanted to obtain
instructions from the PTI founder. The court also sought PTI’s position
regarding the founder’s X account. The assisting counsel said that PTI Chairman
Barrister Gohar was not present in the city and would appear at the next
hearing. Justice Arbab Tahir said there was no need for Barrister Gohar to
appear personally and asked the council to simply inform the court of the
party’s position. Salman Akram Raja maintained that PTI had no connection with
the case concerning a possible ban on the PTI founder’s social media account.
He said that although the PTI founder was a party to the case, he was not being
allowed to give instructions to his lawyer. The court adjourned further
proceedings in the case.
