According to a foreign news
agency, Messina Touring Group, the promoter of Ed Sheeran’s “Loop Tour,” said
that venues hosting the upcoming U.S. tour had informed organizers that they
would not allow concerts featuring Macklemore. This raised concerns that the
entire tour could be canceled, potentially affecting hundreds of thousands of
fans. The promoter said that, following consultations with all relevant
parties, Macklemore would no longer perform in the remaining support shows.
Macklemore had spoken in
support of Palestine during performances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on
September 4 and 5. While chanting “Free Palestine,” he said that the people of
Gaza and the occupied West Bank should know that the world had not forgotten
them. Macklemore’s remarks drew strong
criticism from pro-Israel groups, and a petition was launched calling for his
removal from the tour. Macklemore later defended his position, saying that
criticizing Israel or opposing genocide is not criticism of Jewish people. He
said his message was one of peace, as well as respect, equality, and dignity
for all people. According to reports, Macklemore
had been scheduled to perform at several of Ed Sheeran’s upcoming North
American stadium shows. However, he has now been removed from the remainder of
the tour.
