The tarsier is a small,
big-eyed, primitive-looking carnivorous animal. It is named the “tarsier”
because of its elongated tarsal bones, which help it make
jumps of up to five meters.
Body
The tarsier has a small body
and unusually large eyes. Its eyes are large so that they can capture enough
light to see at night. Its head is round and can be rotated up to 180 degrees
in different directions. Its ears also remain in almost constant motion.
Habitat
The tarsier spends most of
its life in trees. It is mainly found in the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia,
and Brunei.
Interesting Fact
The tarsier is nocturnal,
meaning it is active and hunts primarily at night. In addition to verbal
communication, tarsiers can communicate using ultrasonic sounds.
Most predators, including humans, cannot hear these sounds. This ability helps
tarsiers communicate while remaining relatively undetected by potential
predators.
A Highly Sensitive Animal
Another notable
characteristic of the tarsier is that it is extremely shy and easily stressed.
According to reports, when a tarsier is approached, photographed, or kept in
captivity, it can become severely stressed and may engage in self-destructive
behavior. It has been reported that a stressed tarsier may repeatedly bang its
small skull against a rock or another hard surface, potentially causing fatal
injuries.
