U.S. President Donald Trump has appointed
Katie Zacharia as the new White House press secretary following weeks of
speculation. She will replace former press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Zacharia currently serves as a senior communications adviser at Trump Media
& Technology Group, the company that operates Trump's social media
platform, Truth Social. Announcing the appointment on social media on Friday,
Trump praised Zacharia, saying she had performed exceptionally well in her
current role.
Zacharia thanked the president for the
appointment, saying that communicating the administration's performance and
achievements to the American public would be among her top priorities. She also
expressed her commitment to working with White House journalists and reporters
across the country. Zacharia has previously worked on Trump's political
campaigns. According to Trump, she provided services to his campaigns in key
battleground states. She has also appeared as a political commentator on
various television networks, including Fox News and Newsmax. Before that, she
briefly served as a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Announcing
her appointment, Trump described Zacharia as a supporter of his political
movement, Make America Great Again (MAGA), and expressed confidence
that she would play an effective role as press secretary.
Zacharia will succeed former White House Press
Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who left the position in August. Leavitt stepped
away from the White House to spend more time with her children. Following her
departure, the administration relied on various senior officials to answer
journalists' questions in the absence of a permanent press secretary. Reacting
to her appointment, Zacharia said Leavitt had established a high standard in
the role and that she would strive to live up to it. Former White House Press
Secretary Sean Spicer also voiced his support for Zacharia, describing her as
an effective advocate of the MAGA movement and the America First
policies. He added that she had earned the president's trust.
