A 20-year-old U.S. Marine,
Devin Jacob Ballard, has been arrested on suspicion of killing 39-year-old
Japanese woman Anna Yagi at a hotel in Naha, Okinawa, and stealing her bag and
wallet. However, the suspect has categorically denied the allegations.
According to police, CCTV footage from cameras near the scene showed a foreign
man entering a room with the victim and later leaving alone while carrying her
belongings.
Following the shocking
incident, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi lodged a strong protest with
U.S. authorities, describing the act as extremely brutal. She called on the
U.S. military to fully cooperate with the investigation, strengthen discipline
among its personnel, and take effective measures to prevent similar incidents
in the future. Meanwhile, U.S. Ambassador George Glass also expressed deep
sorrow and condolences to Japanese authorities and the governor of Okinawa,
assuring them of full cooperation in the investigation.
Crimes allegedly committed by U.S. military
personnel in Okinawa have long been a source of strong protests among local
residents and have also caused tensions in Japan-U.S. relations. Around 54,000
U.S. troops are stationed in Japan, with a large proportion based on Okinawa,
where approximately 70% of the land occupied by U.S. military facilities in
Japan is located.
