Madrid: Spain has announced a new military aid
package worth €437 million (approximately $490 million) to strengthen Ukraine's
defence capabilities amid its ongoing war with Russia. Ukrainian President
Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the aid package following a meeting with Spanish
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in Madrid on November 5, 2026. Thanking Spain for
its continued support, Zelensky said the two leaders discussed the details of
the assistance and Ukraine's urgent defense requirements.
The aid package is intended to help Ukraine
protect itself against Russian missile and drone attacks while addressing other
critical defence needs. During the meeting, Zelensky also briefed the Spanish
prime minister on damage caused by Russian strikes to Ukraine's energy
infrastructure, electricity transmission systems, water supplies, logistics
facilities and railway network. According to the Ukrainian president, a large
number of locomotives and railway engines have been destroyed or damaged in
Russian attacks this year. He said the railway system had not suffered damage
on this scale during the entire war in previous years. Zelensky also expressed
concern over the situation in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, saying that the
country's electricity and water supply systems remain under continuous attack.
Under these circumstances, he stressed, humanitarian assistance has become just
as important as military support.
