The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has revealed that North Korea has constructed a new uranium-enrichment facility at its main Yongbyon nuclear complex, which could accommodate up to 28 centrifuge cascades. The agency has also reported that an expanded section of the Kangson facility has begun operations. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has expressed serious concern over the developments, describing them as a clear violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Since IAEA inspectors have not been allowed to enter North Korea since 2009, the agency’s assessments are based on satellite imagery and other available information. According to reports, despite being one of the world’s poorest countries, North Korea under Kim Jong Un is spending tens of millions of dollars annually on its secret nuclear weapons stockpile. After conducting six nuclear tests, North Korea has officially declared itself a nuclear-armed state.
