North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the newly commissioned destroyer would form part of the country’s system for responding to nuclear attacks. According to foreign media reports, the commissioning ceremony for the new warship was held in the coastal city of Wonsan. It remains unclear whether the destroyer itself will be armed with nuclear weapons or whether it will only have the capability to launch nuclear-capable weapons.
Kim Jong Un has been seeking to expand North Korea’s nuclear-capable forces, while the country has also accelerated efforts to modernize its navy. Addressing the ceremony, Kim Jong Un said the deployment of the new warship in the eastern waters of the Korean Peninsula had sent a clear message to North Korea’s enemies. He said the time had come for North Korea to fully exercise its sovereignty both on the surface of the sea and underwater.
According to the report, the warship, named Kang Kon, is the second destroyer of its class to be commissioned into the North Korean Navy. Kim Jong Un also reaffirmed his commitment to continuously advancing North Korea’s naval nuclear weapons and said the country would continue expanding its most powerful strategic assets to protect its maritime sovereignty and regional security.
