A crucial joint session of Pakistan’s Parliament,
comprising the National Assembly and the Senate, is scheduled to be held today
at 11 a.m. at Parliament House to provide constitutional and legal ratification
for the imposition of governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A formal
resolution seeking approval and ratification of governor’s rule in the province
will be presented during the joint session.
It is worth noting that the federal government
recently imposed an emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under
constitutional provisions, citing the deterioration of law and order, growing
insecurity and a rising wave of cross-border terrorism. The government said the
measures were intended to ensure the writ of the state. As part of this process,
separate sessions of the National Assembly and the Senate were held yesterday,
during which the imposition of the emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was
ratified.
The parliamentary proceedings witnessed intense
political tensions and disorder yesterday. In the National Assembly, opposition
members strongly opposed the decision and staged a vigorous protest, while
opposition senators staged a walkout during the Senate session.
Meanwhile, during the National Assembly session,
Speaker Ayaz Sadiq sought to ease the tense political atmosphere and once again
invited the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to return to the negotiating table. The National Assembly speaker also issued
production orders for detained PTI lawmakers Sanaullah Masti Khel and Dawar
Kundi, allowing them to attend parliamentary proceedings and participate in the
legislative process.
