Dubai: Pedestrians in the United
Arab Emirates will face a fine of AED 400 for violating traffic regulations. According
to Arab media reports, Dubai Police have warned residents that anyone caught
crossing the road at a place other than a designated pedestrian crossing will
be fined AED 400. In its warning, police urged the public not to cross roads
anywhere other than designated pedestrian crossings, including zebra crossings,
as doing so could put their lives at risk.
According to police, around 50,000 people were
issued fines in Abu Dhabi alone last year for violating this regulation. Dubai
Police said the same fine also applies to pedestrians who cross at designated
locations but ignore traffic signals. The report stated that 63 people were
killed in road accidents while crossing streets in 2016. However, incidents of
this nature declined by 21 percent in 2017. Dubai Police said an awareness
campaign has been launched to address the issue. Drivers have been advised to
slow down when they see someone crossing the road to help prevent accidents.
Pedestrians, meanwhile, have been reminded to cross roads only at designated
pedestrian crossings.
