Former U.S. President Barack Obama has
rejected President Donald Trump’s narrative, saying that Iran’s nuclear program
was cited as the main reason for the war, even though Iran did not possess
nuclear weapons. According to the British newspaper The
Independent, Obama made the remarks while addressing a Democratic campaign
event in Ohio. He said the current president had made several wrong decisions,
the most significant of which was starting an unnecessary war. “These people
are not serious, not serious at all. Ultimately, you end up paying the price
for their lack of seriousness,” Obama said.
The November 3 midterm elections in the United
States are being viewed as a political test for the Trump administration.
Voters traditionally use midterm elections to express their views on the
president’s performance, the economy, inflation and foreign policy. The ongoing
war with Iran and its impact on oil and fuel prices have also become major
issues in the U.S. election campaign. The election results will not only
determine the balance of power between Republicans and Democrats in Congress
but will also affect the Trump administration’s ability to pass legislation and
implement its policies.
According to Reuters, Obama also criticised
claims of success in the war against Iran, arguing that the conflict had given
Tehran greater economic leverage. The former president said Iranian threats to
attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz had raised concerns among oil-exporting
countries, adding that Iran had effectively gained veto power over the
strategic waterway. Obama accused Trump of corruption, abuse of power and
failure in his strategy toward Iran. He said the midterm elections offered an
opportunity to hold the administration accountable and prevent what he
described as unwise actions by the Trump administration.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Michigan for
Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, Obama described the November 3
elections as a “circuit breaker,” saying, “We have to flip that circuit
breaker.” The former president also accused Trump of corruption and exploiting his
office for personal gain. He said he had never seen a president so openly
misuse public money or use the influence and authority of the office to pursue
personal interests. Obama added that the Republican Party increasingly appeared
to represent a corrupt, incompetent or dysfunctional government. Meanwhile, the
White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Obama’s
allegations and criticism.
