U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted at a
possible military strike against Iran on Sunday, saying Washington has two
options: take military action or reach an agreement with Tehran. His remarks
have left uncertainty over the possibility of renewed escalation in the region
and the future of diplomatic efforts. According to Al Jazeera, Trump said the
United States might have to complete its military action against Iran, but a
major deal with Tehran was also possible. His statement did not make clear whether
a final decision to launch an attack had been made or whether negotiations
would be given more time.
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian
accused the United States of undermining negotiations over an interim
agreement. According to Al Jazeera, he strongly criticised Washington’s
approach but said Iran should continue efforts to reach an agreement. According
to the Associated Press, an interim understanding was reached between the
United States and Iran in June through Pakistan’s mediation. The arrangement
was intended to restore maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, end the
U.S. naval blockade and launch negotiations toward a broader agreement.
Iranian Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam said in
Islamabad that Tehran was ready to resume negotiations with Washington through
Pakistan. He said Iran had also proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz in
exchange for the lifting of the U.S. blockade, but Washington had not agreed to
the proposal. Efforts to restore diplomatic contacts between the United States
and Iran are continuing amid heightened tensions. However, Trump’s latest
remarks have left it unclear whether the next step will be military action or
renewed negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement.
