Washington: The Democratic Party would need the
support of 13 additional senators to impeach U.S. President Donald Trump and
remove him from office. According to the current figures, Democrats hold 54
seats in the Senate. However, removing a president from office requires a
two-thirds majority in the Senate. The U.S. Senate consists of 100 members. If
all senators cast their votes during an impeachment trial, at least 67 votes
would be required to convict Trump and remove him from office. Therefore, even
if all 54 Democratic senators voted in favour of his removal, the party would
still need the support of 13 additional senators.
Under the U.S. constitutional system, a simple
majority in the Senate is not sufficient to remove a president. The House of
Representatives and the Senate have separate roles in the impeachment process. The
House of Representatives initiates impeachment proceedings against a president
and approves the charges, while the Senate holds the trial. Following the
trial, a two-thirds majority of senators present is required to convict the
president and remove him from office. If all 100 senators are present, that means
67 votes. Political analysts say an electoral victory for Democrats could
increase political pressure on President Trump, particularly if the party also
gains control of the House of Representatives. However, initiating impeachment
proceedings and securing the votes needed to remove a president are two
separate stages.
