Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has been conferred with Pakistan’s
Nishan-i-Imtiaz, one of the country’s highest civil awards. A ceremony to
confer the award on the UN chief was held at the President House, attended by
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, National
Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, and foreign ambassadors. Guterres was
awarded the Nishan-i-Imtiaz in recognition of his international services as a
sincere friend of Pakistan. The award also acknowledges his contributions to
diplomacy and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif
congratulated the UN secretary-general on receiving the prestigious honor. Speaking on the occasion, Antonio Guterres
expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Government of Pakistan for the high
honor. He said he had personally witnessed the hospitality and generosity of
the Pakistani people and accepted the award on behalf of all those working at
the United Nations. Guterres said he had
witnessed the suffering of the Pakistani people caused by floods and the
climate crisis. He also praised the Pakistani nation for its determination,
solidarity, and resilience in the fight against terrorism. He added that
Pakistani troops serving in UN peacekeeping missions represent a true
reflection of the country and described Pakistanis as a nation that combines
strength and determination with a deep sense of compassion.
