Major demonstrations in solidarity with the
Palestinian people were held in Washington, D.C., and several other US cities,
with protesters strongly demanding an end to Israeli aggression in the Gaza
Strip and the termination of American military assistance to Israel. The
activities were organized as part of a “National Day of Protest” marking the
third anniversary of the outbreak of the war. Participants carried Palestinian
flags and banners calling for an end to the war and the Israeli occupation.
They chanted slogans condemning the ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza and
reaffirmed their commitment to continuing the public movement in support of
Palestinian rights and against US aid to Israel.
In Washington, D.C., demonstrators gathered
outside the US Capitol, the seat of the American Congress. They called on the
US administration to halt military assistance to Israel and exert pressure to
end the war imposed on the Palestinian people. Solidarity activities also
spread to Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles, California; Dearborn, Michigan; and
Providence, Rhode Island. Protesters in these cities reiterated their demands
for an end to the war, an end to the occupation, and accountability for those
responsible for crimes committed against the Palestinian people. These
demonstrations come amid growing international calls for an end to the war in
Gaza and a halt to arms transfers to Israel. Public movements are seeking to
increase pressure on governments to adopt more effective positions in response
to the conditions facing Palestinians.
Earlier in October, the Global Coalition for
Palestine announced plans to organise simultaneous activities across six continents.
More than 200 organizations from over 60 countries were expected to
participate, calling for Israel to be held accountable, international law to be
enforced, and arms supplies to Israel to be halted. In the same context,
Mustafa Barghouti, secretary-general of the Palestinian National Initiative,
announced preparations by the Global Coalition for Palestine to organize dozens
of demonstrations and events worldwide. These were to include more than 40
marches and gatherings in the United States, alongside similar activities in
European, Asian and African countries. The protests are intended to oppose the
continuation of the war in Gaza and Israeli attacks in the occupied West Bank
and East Jerusalem.
