Washington: U.S. Secretary of
State Marco Rubio and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) have invited Cuban
citizens seeking political change to establish confidential contact with the
agency, while U.S. President Donald Trump has also hinted at possible actions concerning
Cuba.
According to Reuters, Rubio addressed Cubans who
want change in the country in a message posted on social media. He accused the
Cuban government of corruption, failing to fulfill its promises and granting
privileges to a select few. He also invited citizens to play a role in bringing
about change by contacting the CIA confidentially. Following Rubio’s message,
the CIA released a video in Spanish explaining how to contact the agency
securely. The video outlined several security measures, including using a
secure internet connection, a virtual private network (VPN) and a private
browser.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump said at a
gathering in Florida that American naval vessels could stop near Cuba on their
return from Iran, after which Marco Rubio would be sent to finalize a deal.
Trump did not provide details of any potential agreement or action. Cuba has
responded to the American statements, describing Washington’s move as an act of
desperation. Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío
criticized the United States, saying that Washington was now attempting to
recruit people for the CIA publicly.
