An investigative report by Israeli newspaper Haaretz
has revealed allegations of mistreatment of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli
prisons, including weight loss, denial of medical care, and the spread of
diseases. According to the report, Palestinian detainees have faced torture,
starvation, physical assaults, and inadequate medical treatment in Israeli
prisons and detention centres.
According to the investigation, released
Palestinian prisoners reported abuse and inhumane detention conditions at
several facilities, including Megiddo, Nafha, Ktzi'ot, Ofer, and Damon prisons,
as well as a military detention centre in Huwara. Former detainees said they
had lost between 15 and 50 percent of their body weight. They also complained
of collective punishment, repeated humiliation, the spread of scabies, and
delays in receiving medical treatment. According to these former prisoners, the
detention conditions for Palestinians from Gaza are even worse than those
experienced by other Palestinian detainees.
Another section of the report stated that, in
September, the Israel Prison Service held 9,329 Palestinians classified as
security prisoners. According to the investigation, only 16 percent of them had
been convicted by Israeli courts, while the remainder fell into various other
categories. These included detainees awaiting trial, individuals held under
administrative detention, and Palestinians whom the Israeli government
classifies as unlawful combatants. The Haaretz investigation has raised
serious concerns about the treatment of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli
detention facilities, particularly allegations of torture, starvation, physical
abuse, and the denial of adequate medical care.
