Thomas Markle, the father of Meghan Markle, the
Duchess of Sussex and daughter-in-law of the British royal family, appeared
before a U.S. court over the alleged possession of child sexual abuse material.
The 82-year-old was arrested by federal authorities, and the court ordered him
to remain at his residence in Florida under electronic monitoring. According to
the BBC, Thomas Markle faces one federal charge involving the possession of
indecent images of children. The U.S. Department of Justice said the FBI
arrested him after searching two storage units he had been using in the Los
Angeles area. He had reportedly rented the units for nearly 20 years.
The court hearing lasted approximately 30
minutes, during which federal prosecutors presented details of the case. Thomas
Markle was brought to court in a wheelchair, accompanied by two U.S. marshals.
He was not asked to enter a plea, and the date of the next court proceeding
will be set in California. The FBI said approximately 78 items were
seized from the storage units, including film negatives, slides and books.
Authorities allege that the materials included child sexual abuse material.
Investigators say Thomas Markle was identified as the person appearing in two
of the images. The case has yet to be decided by a court.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the agency would use
all available resources to pursue those who harm children. Thomas Markle has
denied the accusations, describing them as “false accusations made by sick
minds”. His daughter, Meghan Markle, and her husband, Prince Harry, have not
commented on his arrest. However, Meghan expressed concern when the allegations
first emerged last month, saying her sympathies were with any children who may
have been affected.
