Japan’s
anime industry has set a new revenue record, driven by its growing global
popularity and unprecedented interest among fans worldwide. According to preliminary
figures released by the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA), the total
market value of Japan’s anime industry reached 4.4491 trillion yen in 2025,
equivalent to approximately $28.2–$28.5 billion. This represents a 15.8 percent
increase compared with 2024. For the first time, the Japanese anime market has
surpassed the 4 trillion yen mark. The remarkable growth has been driven by an
expanding international fan base, global streaming platforms, the success of
anime films in cinemas and sales of related merchandise.
According
to the report, the overseas market continues to account for an increasing share
of the Japanese anime industry’s total revenue. In 2025, revenue from overseas
markets reached 2.5426 trillion yen, or approximately $16.1 billion, marking a
17.2 percent increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, revenue generated
within Japan stood at 1.95 trillion yen, equivalent to around $12.1 billion,
representing a 14.1 percent increase. Overseas markets accounted for 57.1
percent of the industry’s total business, while the domestic market contributed
42.9 percent. This means that international audiences have now become the
largest source of revenue for Japan’s anime industry.
Streaming
platforms such as Netflix are also considered a major factor behind the
worldwide popularity of Japanese anime. These services allow viewers in
different countries to watch Japanese anime with subtitles and dubbing in their
own languages. This has made anime accessible to audiences who previously
remained unfamiliar with the genre because they did not understand Japanese.
The number of Japanese anime fans is growing in numerous countries, including
the United States, European nations, India, Brazil, Mexico and Indonesia.
Successful
films and popular series have also played a significant role in boosting the
popularity of Japanese anime. Released in 2025, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no
Yaiba – Infinity Castle achieved remarkable success worldwide. With
box-office earnings of approximately $793 million, it secured a prominent place
in the history of Japanese anime films. Other releases, including Chainsaw
Man – The Movie: Reze Arc and Detective Conan: One-Eyed Flashback,
also attracted international audiences. These successes have helped strengthen
Japanese animation’s position in the global entertainment industry.
The
report also highlighted an increase in revenue among Japanese anime production
studios. In 2025, the combined business value of anime studios reached 505.5
billion yen, or approximately $3.2 billion, representing an 8.4 percent
increase from the previous year. Overseas business accounted for 27.9 percent
of studio revenue, compared with 25.5 percent in 2024. This growth indicates
that Japanese animation companies are strengthening their presence in international
markets rather than focusing exclusively on domestic operations.
The
Japanese government has also identified anime, manga, video games and other
creative industries as important sources of economic growth and cultural
influence. Its target is to increase annual overseas sales of Japanese anime to
6 trillion yen by 2033, while raising revenue from all Japanese entertainment
and creative content in foreign markets to 20 trillion yen. According to
industry experts, achieving these goals will require producing anime content
tailored to the languages, cultures and regulations of different countries,
expanding local partnerships and tackling piracy and illegal distribution.
Japanese anime studios are also seeking to expand their audiences in emerging
markets such as Saudi Arabia and India.
